I feel so lucky to be a content creator, and I have a great relationship with the brands I work with. My credentials mean I’m approached by many brands with many collaboration enquiries, but I’m very selective in the opportunities I pursue. Integrity is key to my online life – in my opinion, no pay-check is ever worth compromising authenticity. ![Working with a chronic illness is hard. And that’s an understatement. We’re slowly seeing changes and improvements when it comes to disability and employment but heck, we have a long way to go… especially for those of us with Energy Limiting Conditions whose unique needs are often omitted from the conversation altogether.
Not everybody with a chronic illness is well enough to work, and forcing individuals into unsuitable roles or reducing their social support just isn’t the answer that policymakers seem to think it is. Your worth as a human is not hinged on whether or not you can have a job or fit into the standard mold of a ‘typical’ role. But all of that said, there are thousands of people with Energy Limiting Conditions who can work and who *want* to work, but just can’t find accessible opportunities to do so.
In my recent YouTube video, I sat down to answer all of your questions about working with a chronic illness - from a professional perspective as somebody in this line of work, but also from a personal perspective as somebody who knows this struggle first-hand and still has to spend so much valuable energy advocating for themselves and fighting for equal opportunities.
This video focusses on employment (rather than freelance life) and covers finding suitable opportunities, disclosing your disability, managing assumptions and stereotypes, looking after yourself in work, things I wish I’d known at the beginning, and so much more.
